No matter what you've heard or what you see, assume nothing. Adam and Sophie Warner, along with their three-year-old daughter, are spending Memorial Day weekend vacationing in Washington State's Hood Canal, seeking a much-needed getaway to unplug and calm their uneasy marriage. However, on the first day of their trip, Adam witnesses a shocking event - his wife Sophie being abducted by a stranger. A hundred yards from the shore, Adam is helpless to save her, and Sophie disappears.
In a nearby cabin, another couple, Kristen and Connor Moss, find themselves in the dark about Sophie's disappearance, beyond what they've heard in the news. Fortunately for Adam, he can take comfort in knowing that the investigating officer, Lee Husemann, is an old friend of his. Lee is determined to do everything in her power to help solve the case.
As Adam's paranoia about his missing wife escalates, Lee begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together. It becomes clear that the lives of the two couples are converging in unpredictable ways, and the picture that emerges is unsettling. Lee suspects that not everyone is being entirely truthful about what they know, or they may have yet to reveal all the lies they've hidden from the strangers they've married.
The investigation takes unexpected turns, and Lee uncovers a web of deception, secrets, and hidden agendas. As the truth slowly comes to light, the boundaries between the two couples become blurred, and it becomes increasingly difficult to determine who is the victim and who is the perpetrator.
Throughout the ordeal, Adam is torn between his desperate search for his wife and his growing distrust of those around him. He struggles to balance his desire for answers with his need to protect his family, all while navigating the complex web of relationships and the shifting loyalties that have emerged.
As the case unfolds, Lee must confront her own biases and assumptions, and she realizes that the truth is not as straightforward as it initially appeared. The lives of all involved are irrevocably changed, and the consequences of their choices will reverberate long after the case is closed.
In the end, the lesson learned is that in a world where nothing is as it seems, the only way to uncover the truth is to question everything and assume nothing.
